A PIECE OF FRANCE IN BIZKAIA
The Arteaga Castle is a historic Gothic castle located in the heart of the Urdaibai Nature Reserve.
The castle was originally built in the 13th century and later rebuilt in the 19th century for Empress Eugenie of France. Inspired by French Gothic architecture, royal architects transformed the original tower into a neo-medieval palace, while preserving the original exterior walls. Many of the ornamental and decorative elements are still beautifully preserved today.
The wedding reception will be held at the castle, following the ceremony at St. Mary Church in the historical town of Guernica. The church is approximately 35-40 mins from Bilbao city center, and the castle is about 7 mins from the church.
If you prefer to drive, there is a car park with ample spaces located directly next to the venue.
If you would like to stay at the castle hotel on the night of the wedding, please contact us by the end of April so we can arrange a preferred group rate for our guests.
Travel & Stay
Bilbao
If you are traveling from afar to celebrate with us, you will likely arrive in Bilbao.
While in the city, we highly recommend exploring the iconic Guggenheim Museum, wandering through the charming Casco Viejo (Old Town), enjoying pintxos (Basque tapas) and strolling along the Nervión River.
We recommend staying in the Abando area for its central location. Alternatively, Casco Viejo (Old Town) offers a charming, historic atmosphere and vibrant nightlife.
We are planning to organize a coach leaving from Bilbao city center to the wedding venues. The coach will go back to Bilbao at the end of the night. Pick up/drop off point will be updated. Stay tuned!
Taxis are readily available throughout the city, they are typically easy to spot. For convenience, you can use popular taxi apps to book a ride. FREENOW is recommended in Bilbao, Uber is also available.
San Sebastian
San Sebastian is about a 1 hour 30 mins drive from Bilbao and approximately 1 hour 15 mins drive from the wedding venue.
The city is famous for Playa de la Concha and its world-renowned culinary scene led by innovative chefs. In the cobblestoned Old Town (Parte Vieja), boutiques sit alongside lively pintxo bars, where you can enjoy local wines paired with bite-sized regional specialties.
